Zegna Global Store in New Bond Street, London
Ermenegildo Zegna’s flagship boutique on New Bond Street first opened in 1987. Today, after a 20 month renovation project, the reinvented and expanded store opens its doors for the first time.
T
he new store is a reimagination of what a luxury boutique should be in the 21st century, a fruitful partnership between Zegna and architect Peter Marino, whose design the 600m2 space echoes the brand’s use of quality materials, integrity and modern style.

Rich colours, materials and fabrics are used throughout the shop to immerse the visitor in the true world of Zegna and its history. In keeping with Zegna’s approach to fabric and tailoring, each design detail is considered and realised to the highest quality.

The new Su Misura area is on its own dedicated floor. It is an intimate, private space, with a bow window facing onto New Bond Street and a vintage 1950s bar. Throughout the store, furnishings including classic modernist pieces from Carlo Scarpa, Augusto Savini and Osvaldo Borsani channel the rich history of Italian style and design, but the highlight is a specially-commissioned tapestry piece by South African artist William Kentridge.

William Kentridge’s piece marks a new edition of Art in Global Stores, part of ZegnArt, the group’s contemporary art program. The main inspiration comes from the company’s founder, Ermenegildo Zegna, who created in 1910 the historic textile brand that for over a century has offered luxury clothing, “works of art”, all around the world.

‘DARE AVERE’ TAPESTRY

Designed by South African artists William Kentridge and woven in Ermenegildo Zegna Mohair Trophy by The Stephens Tapestry Studio, this wall-mounted tapestry is the artist’s interpretation of the history and values of Ermenegildo Zegna; a snapshot of the company’s centennial progress, captured by sewing together arts, traditions, places, experiences and gestures.

A UNIQUE TERRITORY

The tapestry uses portraits of the founder and stresses in particular the link with the unique territory in which Zegna garments originate - a map of Oasi Zegna in Trivero, where the Lanificio Zegna is located, is used as background. This is where many Zegna fabrics - including those used for Made to Measure suits - are woven

Kentridge uses the black silhouettes, a recurrent element in his works, to represent the profile of Ermenegildo Zegna, together with the cane and the hat the founder always carried with him. The backdrop is a collage of key symbols such as the sewing machine, the label that marks a suit and the accounting books, all placed in the geographical context of Trivero, in the province of Biella, north Italy, where Lanificio Zegna was founded and still operates.

The title Dare / Avere (2016), literally “give / take”, embodies not only the give and take that rule market laws but also Zegna’s longstanding philosophy of giving back to the community that has driven the founder to embark in social and environmental initiatives linked to the territory of Trivero and beyond.
